Digital signage is moving forward using new technologies all the time, now they are using different types of media players for storage and playing of content for the advertisements.

Dynamic advertising installers now have the choice to use either standalone, wireless or networked cabled media players and the reason comes down to price, lead time and the application it will be used for.

Standalone media players.
These are media players that are commonly associated with digital posters and they are built into the screen providing an all on one digital signage solution. These are powered by electricity and have to be updated manually through a USB connector.

Wireless HD media player.
These have the ability to store up to 900GB of data and offer full High Definition resolution at 1080p. These are at the sharp end as they come complete with HDMI connectors to plug direct to the flat screen displays and will also support Flash and MPEG 1,2,4 also supports MP3, WMA, WAV and AC3 audio files. What makes it unique is that is has a WIFI connection built into the player, so you can use a laptop to login and upload data from a remote location, the wireless networks works on 802.11G and is backward compatible with other older wireless infrastructure.

Networked High Definition media player.
As the name suggests you have to connect this media player to a data network so the content can be uploaded, this is thought to be the most traditional method; however it can be extremely expensive due to the use of fibre optic cable if the installation is coving for example a football stadium.

These are also used for the deployment of digital menu boards and are normally connected to the rear of the screen and the cables run back to a computer near the counter where the updates can be synchronised from.

Information is key in any business environment. Keeping customers informed of new products, advertising them and providing valuable information about your business is key to any successful marketing campaign.

And there are plenty of ways of marketing messages too. Direct email, newsletters and print media are widely used to supply information to customers and suppliers. However, not every business is fortunate to have the contact details of every potential customer or lead and in some industries the only potential sales that can be generated come from the people walking through the door or past the window.

And it is marketing to these people where digital signage is above and beyond any other form of signage or information delivery. Traditionally, the only method of marketing to retail customers has been to place print media and traditional signage in view of the customers.

To attract passing trade, signage such as for sales signs have been placed outdoors or in window displays to pull in customers. However, traditional signage has very little effect on the modern shopper. Just think, when was the last time you were convinced to enter a shop just because you saw a sign saying sale?

Digital signage is perfect for retail marketing and no other method of signage can match it for its effectiveness, flexibility and ability to engage customers.

Digital signage is far more effective at providing information. Not only can an unlimited number of messages be relayed but they can be altered to match specific times or type of customer. Different content can be displayed outside using outdoor digital signage to get customers through the door while indoor screens near a point of sale can be used to take advantage of a captive audience.

Not only is digital signage more flexible and dynamic, it still holds a newness about it that traditional media can’t match. Viewers are far more captivated by digital signage than regular print media increasing the effectiveness of it.

As with any new technology, the buzz surrounding digital signage can often mislead people into believing that it is simple and straight forward method of advertising, generating awareness and general marketing.

There are of course plenty of advantages in using LCD screens for out of home. It’s vibrant, dynamic, flexible and far more eye-catching and engaging than standard print media. However, whilst many people in the Digital Signage industry (DS) will explain how beneficial it can be and how digital screens can increase brand awareness, few will explain some of the disadvantages of it.

However, there are some disadvantages to using LCD or plasma screens for out of home use:
Difficult to establish a return on investment.

One of the main disadvantages of digital signage compared to regular media is that there is often a high initial outlay. In setting up a DS campaign not only do the screens have to be purchased but also content creation software and media playing devices not too mention having to pay someone to create and manage the campaign if you feel unable to do so yourself.

The technology requires some experience

Creating content and networking a set of screens does take some technical know how and while it is possible to do almost every aspect of digital signage implementation yourself, some background in technology or computing is required otherwise it would be far easier to employ somebody to take care of these aspects for you.

Digital signage requires protection

Unlike the TV that sits in the relatively safety of your front room, a digital signage screen can be in a far more precarious position. Not only are they in a public area and are susceptible to knocks and impacts (both accidental and deliberate) and in the case of outdoor digital signage they need to be protected against the weather too.

Outdoor TVs can be used as outdoor digital billboards but they still need protecting from impacts and the costs of these waterproof TVs are extremely high.

However, it is not all bad news. Protection for digital signage and in particular outdoor screens is available quite cheaply in the form of an outdoor LCD enclosure.

As LCD enclosures are fully waterproof and manufactured and can house almost any standard LCD or plasma screen they are ideal for use in digital signage – both indoors and out.

Outdoor digital signage is not a black art, we will try to dispel any myths, so that anyone can create an outdoor digital signage solution for a very minimal cost.

One thing that puts companies off marketing projects is the unknown, “what if?” now what if you installed an outdoor digital signage solution that was seen by an most of the towns folk, for example if you are in Massachusetts near Lenox and you have stock of “Magic Ice”, then for some freak of nature snow comes in January, yes sure the snow clearing contractors do their job and clears the roads, but what about side walks and car parks and the un-treated roads, like Rattlesnake Pass?

Informing passers by that you have this stock will make them think and will result in them calling in and buying your stock, thus increasing your sales for this product. Now not used just for novelty items, you can also market anything as well as provide advertising for local businesses or stores, charging them to advertise on your signage hardware.

So how do I do it?

First you need a good spot near high traffic areas, you might even have some parking spots that get little use, here you can dig a hole 24″ deep, then concrete a 4″ x 4″ steel post into the ground making sure it is level.
Secondly, you can weld a steel plate that is 27 ½” wide x 20″ high onto the post this is what you will mount the hardware from.
Third, purchase an outdoor LCD enclosure, this is a special outdoor case for the TV and provides both cooling and heating for a year round solution that is thermostatically controlled.
Fourth, purchase a low cost LCD or plasma TV from Goodings or Target an install the TV into the LCD enclosure, then cable the television up to mains and cable back to your store with CAT 5 data cable to a computer.
Fifth, now produce your media on your local computer and upload it to the screen through the computer cable.

Or, you could buy an LCD advertising screen that has the media player in built and all you need to do is drag the media to the memory card on your computer and then insert the card into the screen’s secure compartment, then lock the LCD enclosure and your advertising screen can be controlled through the remote control of the advertising screen, to select the dwell time (the length of time a particular image or video is displayed for).

A digital poster up to 40″ would cost less than a thousand bucks, but imagine if you pulled in an extra 55 customers over a week and they all spent over , you will have turned over 00, don’t forget the extra revenue from your neighbours ads, this will certainly cover all the hardware and deployment costs to get this set up.

Outdoor digital signage is becoming a popular marketing tool. And it is not just advertising that this dynamic, colorful and eye-catching medium is being used for – all sorts of industries and applications are using TV screens in an outdoor location.

From outdoor digital signage; digital posters; menu boards, to information services like wayfinding – a seemingly endless host of applications can be potentially achieved with an outdoor LCD screen.

But of course you can’t just take any screen outside into the elements. It needs to be protected and to do this there are a couple of options:

Outdoor TV Screens
Standard/commercial screens in a digital signage enclosure

An outdoor TV screens is perhaps the simplest solution. These devices are waterproof and are often high brightness allowing them to be used in almost any outdoor location. However, these devices are highly expensive and while they are more durable than a standard TV screen they are vulnerable to vandalism and quite often need to be protected by sort of enclosure.

Standard and commercial grade LCD screens, normally used for indoor environments, can be taken outside if protected in an LCD enclosure (or plasma enclosure). These devices offer all round protection. They are waterproof (to NEMA 4 or IP65) and more often than not contain heating or cooling elements such as fans (an even air conditioners) so they can be used in any location – and matter what the ambient temperature.

As the cost of an LCD enclosure, combined with the price of a commercial TV (even high brightness) is far lower than bespoke outdoor devices and, furthermore LCD enclosures are manufactured from steel with anti-shatter screen protection providing ant-vandal and impact protection – something outdoor TVs lack.

When shopping for an LCD enclosure – look for a NEMA 4 or IP65 – and ensure it is equipped with cooling fans.

Outdoor digital signage has many advantages over indoor systems, including:

• Larger potential audience
• Less signage competition than indoor areas
• Can be viewed from pavements and in vehicles

But there also many disadvantages to outdoor signage screens and perhaps the foremost of these are the protection requirements. There is much that an LCD enclosure operating in an outdoor location needs to protect against:

? Weather ? Water ? Dust ? Heat ? Cold ? Direct sunlight – Are just a few of the outdoor elements that need to be defended against? However, there is also one other element that outdoor digital signage needs to be protected against: vandalism.

Sadly, vandalism is an all too common problem in the modern world and outdoor digital signage screens are a tempting target.

Smashed screens, damaged enclosures and even stolen LCDs are a common occurrence on many unsupervised outdoor digital signage displays. And the problems caused by a vandalised outdoor digital signage screen are also manyfold:

• Cost of replacement
• Decreases the chance of a return on investment
• A dead screen is not advertising – losing revenue
• Broken glass or other hazards could leave you liable for any injuries

Protection against Vandalism

There are several areas and aspects to protecting a digital signage screen:

• Shatterproof Glass is highly important – the screen is the most vulnerable aspect of a digital signage system it can also cause the most hazards if broken. Anti-vandal screens are impossible to shatter – some are even tested against low velocity bullets.

• Steel LCD Enclosure -Whatever type of digital signage enclosure is used; steel is by far the best material to offer rugged and anti-vandal protection.

• Tamperproof Locks -Tamperproof locks are also a good idea to prevent attempts at theft.

• Prevention of insertion – another anti-vandal measure that is often overlooked is preventing people from inserting objects (including fingers) into the enclosure which could damage or disable the device (especially if water is squirted in or another liquid)

Digital signage comes in all shapes and sizes but due to the advances in the technology over recent years, giant digital signage boards are now springing up all over the place, particular in outdoor locations as roadside digital billboards or other outdoor digital signage.

Why size matters

When it comes to getting your message across size really does matter especially as so many more digital signage systems are springing up all over the place, making getting noticed even more difficult.

Uses of increasingly larger screens for outdoor digital signage means that nearly every week a new install is claiming to be the world’s largest. And even standard commercial screens housed in outdoor LCD enclosures are now commonly found as large as 70″

However, for the true monoltithic digital signage systems you have to look to the world of sports where large screens have been commonplace for many years. However, traditional just low quality pixelated LED screens are now being replaced by equally large LCD screens – and even High Definition LCDs.

Examples of large digital signage screens

Perhaps the largest digital signage screen currently in the world is at the Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City. Strictly speaking its not a single screen but the entire building has had LED lights built into all four exterior walls. But at 500 feet high it is certainly impressive.

Kansai International Airport in Japan has a rather smaller screen at just 4 x 3metres but it is curved making it the world’s largest curved plasma display.
However for a true giant digital signage screen you have to look to the Dallas cowboys who have a four-sided video display above their NFL pitch. Each screen is 22 metres high and nearly 50 metres wide – truly awesome.

There is one location where digital signage has been used to its fullest potential and that is in sports stadiums. Football arenas, baseball grounds and athletics stadiums are all places where the true potential of digital signage has been realised.

There are various reasons why digital screens are used by businesses and industry such as information, advertising and raising brand awareness. And in sports stadiums digital signage is being used successfully for all of these applications.

Digital signage for pitchside sponsorship

Pitch side sponsorship is a huge money maker for football teams and sports clubs. Not only is sponsorship and advertising along the pitch visible to the ground’s attendees but also as many sporting events are televised these adverts can reach an audience of millions.

Traditionally these adverts, branding and sponsorship messages have been based on traditional print media, however, outdoor digital signage can generate far more revenue from the same space.

By using TV screens to provide the branding and sponsorship around the pitch not only can moving images be introduced as part of the messages making the adverts more attractive but also multiple adverts can be relayed on each screen and swapped at regular intervals (such as every ten seconds) meaning far more revenue can be collected from the same space.

The scoreboards too can be interlaced with advertisements and other information increasing revenue streams.

Hospitals across the globe have begun to embrace digital signage. From reception areas to wards and even car parks with outdoor digital  signage, screens are being installed in all manner of places throughout hospital premises.

But unlike many industries that have adopted digital signage as an advertising medium, hospitals have found use for it as a great method of passing information to staff, visitors and patients.

Why Digital Signage?

Communication has always been a challenge in a hospital setting. With so many different members of staff, in so many departments and a continual daily supply of new patients and visitors, ensuring people are informed about important information can be difficult.

Pagers, notice boards and PA systems are just some of the communication systems that hospitals have employed in the past but digital signage is proving even more effective than many of these
For hospitals, digital signage provides the ability to pass information at real time. Important messages can be relayed to every digital signage screen all over the hospital (and even across other sites in the hospital trust too) at the click of a button.

This is so much more effective than the traditional notice board where some poor administrator had to photocopy and walk to each and every notice board to pin up the information and as hospital grounds are very large, that process itself can take a while.

And quite often it could be days before staff members read it or had the information filtered down to them, which is why digital signage is so useful to hospital environments.

And it’s not just messaging to staff members that it is benefiting. Digital signage can provide visitors with important information too – such as ward closures and visiting times – helping to avoid confusion – and even outdoor digital signage can be used to ensure that even not yet entering the hospital can be made aware of important information

LCD enclosures are commonly used in hospital environments as protective enclosures. These are useful for outdoor applications to protect from the weather but commonly they are also used in psychiatric wards and other areas with vulnerable adults for television viewing as the LCD enclosures can prevent the television being used as a weapon or a means to commit self harm.
